Pima Theater Takes on Satirical Musical "Urinetown," Feb. 26 - March 13

Tucson, AZ – Pima Theater presents the Tony Award–winning musical “Urinetown” as its Spring musical, offering a sharp, funny and unexpectedly relevant night of theatre.

Set in a near-future world struggling with extreme drought, “Urinetown” follows Bobby Strong, a young man who challenges the powerful UrineGood Company. The corporation controls all public restrooms and charges high fees, forcing people to pay for a basic human need. As Bobby joins a growing rebellion, the story unfolds with humor, music and surprising twists.

Through satire and self-aware comedy, “Urinetown” takes on themes of corporate greed, social inequality and resistance. While the subject matter is serious, the show leans fully into comedy, using bold characters, energetic musical numbers and an intentionally over-the-top style to keep audiences laughing.

The production is directed by Pima Theater’s production manager and faculty member, Maryann Green, with choreography by faculty member Mickey Nugent, and music direction by guest Matthew Holter. The creative team embraces the show’s playful tone while building a world that reflects both scarcity and excess.

Green says, “What I love about this show is that it’s a social critique of both sides. The audience starts out thinking that the Big Corporation is the villain of the story, but as it goes on, they hopefully realize that the Rebellion, while their hearts are in the right place, aren’t morally perfect either. The writers have so cleverly infused a messy social commentary with broad humor and sarcasm so that the audience can sit and have a great time for two hours and then maybe on the drive home, they can start to think about some of the broader issues that come up in the themes of the show.”

Set designer and actor, Zora Street, says “The set for this show will showcase the divide of the class system and hopefully impact the thoughts and ideas of our audience. The lower class scenic design is drab and eclectic while the upper class scenic design is clean and gold.”

With its mix of humor and commentary, “Urinetown” invites audiences to enjoy a wildly entertaining musical while also considering the choices societies make when resources become limited.
